What Happens When You Take Tea to the People

What Happens When You Take Tea to the People

I didn't expect to leave with a full heart. But I did. Today I showed up solo to Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living on 75th Street with a tea station, a few floral teacups, some honey, a handful of teas, and a whole lot of intention. I didn't know exactly what to expect. What I got was one of the most meaningful mornings I've had since starting the Chicago Afternoon Tea Society. How This Came Together

This opportunity came through Aldermanic Candidate Brittney "Bee" Gault, who reached out and invited us to serve as the Tea Time Sponsor for "The Tea on 8th," a Political Bingo and Town Hall Tea for 8th Ward residents held right at Grand Regency. When she asked, I said yes immediately. Because this is exactly the kind of thing the Chicago Afternoon Tea Society should be doing. Not just curated events in beautiful spaces, but taking tea to the people. Meeting community where it already lives.

The Room Between 10 and 20 residents gathered in the Regency Room at 1448 E 75th St, and from the moment I walked in, they were warm. Genuinely, immediately warm. There was no awkward settling in period. No waiting for the room to open up. They were ready, curious, and welcoming from the start. And that set the tone for everything. What We Did Together I set up the tea station with floral teacups, honey, tea tins, and a little bit of everything that makes a tea moment feel intentional, not just functional. Then we just... talked. And poured. And sipped. I walked them through different ways to brew tea at home. We talked about the health benefits, chamomile for rest, ginger for digestion, hibiscus for heart health. We talked about how something as simple as a daily cup can become a ritual, a moment of softness in the middle of whatever the day brings. They asked great questions. They were engaged. And when the tea was poured and everyone had a cup in hand, the room just settled into something really beautiful. The Moment I Will Not Forget At the end of the experience, a couple of residents pulled me aside and asked if there were volunteer opportunities for them to help at future events. I had to take that in for a second. They didn't just enjoy the experience. They wanted to be part of building it. They saw themselves in this community and wanted to contribute to it. That... that is what the Chicago Afternoon Tea Society is for. Not a demographic. Not an age group. A community. A real, open, welcoming community built around the simple act of gathering over tea. Why This Matters I started CATS because I believe that intentional gathering changes people. That when you slow down, sit together, and share something warm, something shifts. Today confirmed that this belief has no age limit. The residents of Grand Regency of Jackson Park showed me that the desire for connection, for community, for a beautiful moment to call your own, that doesn't go away. It lives in all of us, at every stage of life. And if a cup of tea and an afternoon together can give someone that... then we will keep showing up. What's Next This visit planted a seed for something bigger. The Chicago Afternoon Tea Society is exploring ways to make community tea experiences like this one a recurring part of what we do. Taking tea into senior living communities, supportive living spaces, and neighborhood gathering places across Chicago's South Side. If you are a community organization, building manager, or event coordinator who would like to bring a tea experience to your residents or members, we would love to connect. This is just the beginning of what tea can do in this city.
